Every so often it is worth tearing down your setup and building it back up on purpose. I did that recently on a Linux laptop, starting from close to nothing.
I set up a better shell, a version manager for Node so I can switch between project requirements without a fight, my editor of choice, containers for local services, and a terminal multiplexer so I can keep several sessions organized in one window. I also swapped a handful of the old default command line tools for faster, friendlier modern versions that do the same jobs with better output.
None of this writes code for me. What it does is remove friction. A hundred tiny annoyances a day, gone, so the machine gets out of the way and I can think about the actual problem.
People underestimate how much a rough environment taxes you. Every small snag is a little tax on your focus, and they add up over a week. Rebuilding on purpose, and understanding each piece instead of copying someone else’s config blindly, was worth the afternoon it cost me. I know exactly why every part of it is there.
